The best time to visit Big Sur

September and October usually give Big Sur its clearest days. Every other season trades something: fog in summer, storms in winter, a little rain with the spring flowers.

Big Sur has a Mediterranean climate: dry summers and autumns, cool wet winters. More than 70 percent of the rain falls between December and March. The coast rarely gets hot, and summer fog keeps it cool even in July.

The calendar also matters for the road. Winter storms are when Highway 1 closes, and the 2026 fire season showed that August and September can close it too.

The quick answer

The best month for Big Sur is usually September or October: clear skies after the summer fog, warm afternoons and thinner crowds. April and May come second for green hills, wildflowers and northbound gray whales. Winter is dramatic but brings the most road closures.

Which month is best to visit Big Sur?

September or October. The fog usually clears after Labor Day, the winter storms have not started, and the summer crowds have gone home.

Here is the year in four seasons. Temperatures are typical coast figures: 50s at night to 70s by day from June to October, 40s to 60s from November to May.

What is the best time of day to go to Big Sur?

Late morning to sunset. Morning fog often lifts by midday, and the low afternoon light on the cliffs is the best of the day.

Early starts pay off at Point Lobos and Pfeiffer Beach, where lots fill by late morning. For the views, the afternoon is usually clearer. Sunset times shift a lot over the year: about 8:28 p.m. at the summer solstice, 6:15 p.m. in late October and close to 5 p.m. by mid-November, after clocks go back on 1 November 2026. In December the sun sets before 5.

Around the winter solstice, on a handful of December and January evenings, the setting sun shines through Keyhole Arch at Pfeiffer Beach. Expect company with tripods.

Is summer a good time to visit Big Sur?

It works, but it is the busiest and foggiest season. Start late, expect gray mornings, and arrive at Pfeiffer Beach before 11 or after 4.

Summer fog sits below about 2,000 feet and usually clears by midday, though it can roll back in late afternoon. Locals call the early part June gloom. Pfeiffer Beach has 65 parking spaces and is usually full on summer and holiday weekends.

August also starts fire season. In 2026 the Timber and Plaskett fires closed up to 40 miles of Highway 1 in late August, and the last section did not reopen until about 14 September.

What is Big Sur like in the fall?

Clear, warm and calmer. September and October are the pick of the year, with red madrones and yellow sycamores in the canyons.

Autumn 2026 comes with road work. After the fires, Caltrans runs one-way signals at Point Sur and Torre Canyon, and full daytime closures at Torre Canyon are expected on some days (Caltrans release for Torre Canyon). Plan for delays of 5 to 20 minutes and check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave.

Wildlife keeps going: juvenile elephant seals haul out at Piedras Blancas from September, peaking in late October, and the first adult males arrive at the end of November.

Is winter a bad time to visit Big Sur?

Not bad, but risky. The light, the surf and the whales are at their best, and the road is at its most fragile.

Most of the year's rain falls between December and March, and that is when slides close Highway 1. Regent's Slide shut the road south of Lucia from February 2024 until 14 January 2026. With El Nino storms forecast, the governor signed an executive order on 27 October 2026 to speed up preventive work on the highway.

The rewards: gray whales passing south from December to February, peaking in January, and elephant seal births at Piedras Blancas that peak in late January. Read our winter 2026-27 outlook before you book.

When is wildflower and whale season in Big Sur?

Wildflowers from about March to May. Gray whales pass south in December to February and north from mid-February to May, peaking in March.

Spring turns the hills green and the bluffs orange and purple with poppies and lupine. Garrapata and Point Lobos are easy places to see them from a short trail. Waterfalls run fullest after winter rain, though the trails to Pfeiffer Falls and Limekiln Falls are closed in 2026.

Whales: from March, gray whale mothers and calves travel north close to shore. Humpbacks and blue whales feed off Monterey in summer and autumn (Monterey Bay Whale Watch). Sea otters stay all year. California condors, reintroduced here since 1997, turn up over the ridges in any season.

How should you dress for Big Sur?

In layers, all year. Expect fog and wind on the bluffs, and a big swing between a foggy morning and a sunny afternoon.

  • A warm layer: a fleece or light down jacket, even in July.
  • A windproof shell: Hurricane Point earned its name.
  • Closed shoes: the overlook trails are uneven, and the Point Sur tour climbs about 360 feet in the open.
  • Sun protection: once the fog lifts, the sun is strong.
  • Rain gear from November to April: and a plan B if the road closes.

When should you avoid Big Sur?

Holiday weekends, storm days and days with scheduled full closures. A clear Tuesday in October beats a foggy Saturday in July.

Before any trip, check three things: the forecast, Caltrans QuickMap and the latest posts on our road status page. In autumn 2026 also look at what reopened after the fires: some parks are open with trails closed.

Then pick a route that fits the season with our one-day itinerary.

Is October a good time to visit Big Sur?
