Big Sur's old road, by e-bike

A guided e-bike ride of about 12 miles up the Old Coast Road, the dirt route that carried traffic around Bixby Canyon before the bridge opened in 1932. Pick it to get off Highway 1 and into the hills, with Point Sur below you.

Old Coast Road E-Bike Tour

About this experience

This is not a coast-length tour. You meet at the paved pullout across Highway 1 from the Andrew Molera State Park entrance, 21 miles south of Carmel, and ride north and inland on the Old Coast Road. It climbs a ridge with views toward Point Sur, then drops through oak and redwood along the Little Sur River. About 12 miles in two and a half hours.

The catch for 2026: after the Timber Fire, State Parks lists the Old Coast Road section and East Molera Trail closed, with all backcountry trails east of the highway closed indefinitely. The tour may run on a changed route or not at all for now. Confirm with the operator that your date is running before you plan a day around it.

Fitness matters even with a motor. The listing rates it intermediate, the road is unpaved and steep in places, and there are no restrooms on the route. Riders must be 15 or older, under 287 lb and at least 5 ft 1 in tall.

Tips before you book

  • Call or message the operator a few days before: the Old Coast Road was listed closed after the 2026 Timber Fire.
  • Use the restroom at Andrew Molera or in the valley before you start. There are none on the ride.
  • Allow for the one-way signal at Point Sur if you drive down from Carmel. It has been running since February 2026.
  • Wear closed shoes and a layer. Afternoons on the ridge can be hot; the redwood floor is cool.
