Big Sur tours from San Francisco

Every Big Sur day trip from San Francisco spends about five hours on the road to Carmel and back. The real difference between them is what they do with the rest, and how far down the coast they go.

San Francisco to Carmel is about 124 miles, roughly 2.5 hours. The Big Sur Valley is another 26 miles on. That leaves a day tour with three to five hours for Monterey, Carmel and the coast combined, which is why so many of them turn around near Bixby Bridge.

Below are the tours sold on GetYourGuide in 2026, compared on what matters: furthest point south, group size and price.

The quick answer

The cheapest Big Sur day trip from San Francisco is a 12-hour small-group tour from $193 per person that reaches the Bixby Bridge area. Private cars from the city cost $890 to $946 for the group and can go further; only one, the private McWay Falls tour, is built to reach Julia Pfeiffer Burns.

Can you do a Big Sur day trip from San Francisco?

Yes, but plan for 9 to 12 hours, about five of them on the freeway. You will see the northern Big Sur coast, not all of it.

Big Sur Lodge is 150 miles from San Francisco, and McWay Falls is about 11 miles further. A tour that also stops in Monterey, on the 17-Mile Drive and in Carmel has to trade some of that coast for those towns. That is not a scam. It is geography.

If the coast is the point, ask one question before you book: where does the tour turn around?

Hurricane Point, just south of Bixby Bridge: the listed turnaround of the group day tour.

Which San Francisco tours go furthest into Big Sur?

The private McWay Falls tour, which lists the coast as far as Julia Pfeiffer Burns. The group tour and most private cars reach the Bixby Bridge area, about 13 miles south of Carmel.

All prices are GetYourGuide from-prices in 2026. Private prices cover the whole group.

What does the group day tour from San Francisco include?

Hotel pickup, Monterey, the 17-Mile Drive with its fee paid, Carmel, then Bixby Bridge and Hurricane Point before the drive back. It is a new listing with no reviews yet.

The listed route for this 12-hour day starts with San Francisco hotel pickup around 6:30 a.m., then Monterey Bay and Cannery Row, the 17-Mile Drive with the Lone Cypress and Bird Rock, and Carmel. Big Sur comes last: Bixby Bridge and Hurricane Point, then the long drive home. A same-priced version sold elsewhere uses 15-seat vans and offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Honest verdict: it is a Monterey Peninsula day with a taste of Big Sur at the end. Good value at $193 if that is what you want. Check the operator and the details on the listing, since it is new.

Is a private Big Sur tour worth it?

For three or four people, often yes. Split four ways, the private tours cost $178 to $237 each, close to the group price, with your own pace and stops.

Per head, the Dingo Tours private tour works out at $236.50 for four, the Alegro day at $229.50 for four, and the McWay Falls tour at $178 for five. Against $193 a seat on the group tour, a full car makes private the better deal. For two people it costs about double.

The Dingo Tours car goes via Santa Cruz and Capitola, with guides speaking English, Spanish or Portuguese. One guest from the United Kingdom wrote in July 2024: Great way to see spectacular coastline and have expert knowledge on best spots. The Alegro day starts with coast stops like Shark Fin Cove and Pescadero State Beach; it has only a few reviews so far, and entrance fees appear both as included and as "if applicable", so confirm before you book.

Three or four of you? The private tour from San Francisco costs about the same per head as the group van, with your own driver-guide.

Which tour from San Francisco reaches McWay Falls?

The private McWay Falls tour. Its listed route runs down the coast via Pigeon Point and Santa Cruz, through Monterey, the 17-Mile Drive and Carmel, then south past Bixby Bridge to McWay Falls.

It is a 12-hour day with an 8 a.m. start, private for up to five, with water, fuel and the 17-Mile fee included and gratuities extra. The operator is not named on the listing data we could check, so read the listing before you pay.

One 2026 catch: Torre Canyon, between Nepenthe and McWay Falls, has one-way control and some full daytime closures this autumn (Caltrans release for Torre Canyon). On a closure day the falls may be out of reach. Ask the operator how they handle it.

Should you take a tour from Monterey instead?

If you can spend a night on the peninsula, yes. The half-day tour from Monterey gives you three hours on the coast instead of five on the freeway.

The half-day coast tour picks up at Monterey Peninsula hotels, covers about 30 miles of the northern coast with four or five short stops, including Bixby Bridge and a redwood walk in Pfeiffer Big Sur, and costs $227 per person. Groups of three or fewer pay a $60 fuel fee; it needs at least two guests and takes up to 12. Read the cancellation terms on the listing.

Pair it with the 17-Mile Drive e-bike tour ($79 per person) the same day or the next, and you have covered both famous coast roads without a car.

Is driving yourself cheaper than a tour?

For two or more people, usually. A rental, fuel and a few $10 park fees cost less than two group seats. You also drive five hours of freeway and 50 miles of curves.

Fees to budget in 2026: $10 per car at each state park, $15 at Pfeiffer Beach and $12.50 for the 17-Mile Drive. Fill up before Carmel, since coast fuel runs near $10 a gallon.

A middle way: sleep in Monterey and rent the 1965 Mustang convertible for three hours ($499 for up to four). Check driver age and mileage limits on the listing; they are not stated in the data we have. Our guide to driving Highway 1 covers the rest.

How do you choose between the San Francisco tours?

Pick by group size and how far south you need to go. Budget and solo: the group tour. Three to five people: a private car. McWay Falls or bust: the McWay tour.

  • Solo or a couple on a budget: the group tour at $193 each, accepting the Bixby Bridge turnaround.
  • A family of four who want control: the Dingo Tours private car, about $237 each.
  • Four or five who want McWay Falls: the McWay tour, $890 for up to five.
  • A slower, custom day: the Alegro private trip, with snacks and water in the car.
  • Anyone sleeping in Monterey: skip the city tours and take the half day from the peninsula.
