Big Sur in one day: the itinerary

One day on the Big Sur coast works if you pick a section and stick to it. This is a timed plan from Carmel, with the miles, the fees and the 2026 road signals built in.

Big Sur is not a town you visit. It is about 90 miles of Highway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon, and the famous sights sit in the first 37 of them. Bixby Bridge is 13 miles from Carmel, the redwoods of Pfeiffer Big Sur 26, McWay Falls about 37. Hearst Castle, at the far end, is close to 90.

A day trip sees part of that coast, never all of it. The plan below covers Carmel to McWay Falls and back: about 74 miles of driving and six stops, timed for autumn 2026 when two one-way signals slow the road.

The quick answer

Yes, you can do Big Sur in one day if you treat it as Carmel to McWay Falls and back: about 74 miles, roughly 2.5 hours at the wheel plus stops. Leave Carmel by 9 a.m., turn around at Julia Pfeiffer Burns by 2:30 p.m. and you are back before dark. The full coast to Hearst Castle only works one way.

Can I do Big Sur in one day?

Yes, the northern half. Carmel to McWay Falls and back fits into a day with real stops; the whole 90 miles to San Simeon does not, unless you drive it one way and sleep at the far end.

The trouble is the return. Carmel to Hearst Castle takes about 2.5 to 3 hours with no stops at all, so a round trip would mean five or six hours of driving before you get out of the car once. Turn around at McWay Falls instead and you spend more of the day on foot than at the wheel.

Coming from San Francisco changes the maths. Carmel is about 124 miles from the city, roughly 2.5 hours each way, which eats five hours before Big Sur begins. From the city, McWay Falls is a stretch; the Big Sur Valley at mile 26 is a sensible turnaround.

Bixby Bridge, 13 miles from Carmel. Many day tours from San Francisco turn around near here.

How long does it take to drive through Big Sur?

About 2.5 to 3 hours from Carmel to Hearst Castle without stops. Carmel to Bixby Bridge is about 25 minutes, to Pfeiffer Big Sur about 45 and to McWay Falls about an hour.

Those times assume a clear road, and in late October 2026 it is not quite clear. Caltrans runs a 24-hour one-way signal at Point Sur (about 5 minutes of waiting; see the Point Sur signal) and one-way control at Torre Canyon, between Nepenthe and McWay Falls, with delays of up to 20 minutes. On 29 October Torre Canyon closed completely from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., and the Caltrans release for Torre Canyon calls it one of several full daytime closures to come. What does a one-day Big Sur itinerary look like?

Point Lobos at opening, the Garrapata bluffs, Bixby Bridge from a legal pullout, redwoods at Pfeiffer Big Sur, lunch in the valley, McWay Falls, then Pfeiffer Beach on the way back.

The timings below suit an October day with sunset around 6:15 p.m. After clocks change on 1 November, sunset moves to about 5 p.m. by mid-November, so start an hour earlier or drop Pfeiffer Beach.

What can I do in Big Sur in one day?

Short walks, viewpoints and one beach. With most backcountry trails shut after the 2026 fires, a day here is about overlooks and walks of a mile or two, not long hikes.

  • Walks that are open: the Soberanes Canyon Trail at Garrapata (about 1.25 miles to the back of the canyon), the Redwood Grove boardwalk and Buzzards Roost at Pfeiffer Big Sur, the McWay Falls overlook (about half a mile), and the steep Partington Cove trail.
  • Wildlife: sea otters in the kelp off Point Lobos and Garrapata all year, gray whales from December to May.
  • A lighthouse: Point Sur opens only for docent tours (Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday), about three hours and $20 for adults. Call ahead; see Point Sur State Historic Park.
  • A long lunch on a terrace 800 feet above the ocean at Nepenthe, if it suits your budget.

Pfeiffer Falls Trail is closed until further notice after the Timber Fire. Do not plan the day around it.

Should you start from San Francisco, Monterey or Carmel?

Sleep in Monterey or Carmel if you can. Starting from San Francisco adds about five hours of freeway, which is why many city tours turn around near Bixby Bridge.

From a Monterey or Carmel hotel you reach Bixby Bridge in under 40 minutes and can do this whole itinerary. From San Francisco, the group day tour follows a route that reaches the Bixby Bridge and Hurricane Point area after Monterey and the 17-Mile Drive. The private McWay Falls tour is the one that goes as far as Julia Pfeiffer Burns, and it takes 12 hours to do it.

No car and only half a day? The tour from Monterey covers Bixby Bridge and the redwoods in three hours.

Starting in San Francisco and want McWay Falls in the same day? The private McWay tour is built for it, for up to five people.

Which direction should you drive?

South in the morning. Southbound you are in the ocean-side lane, so the pullouts are easy right turns and nothing sits between you and the view.

Plan your stops for the drive down and treat the return as transit, with one exception: Pfeiffer Beach, which is best late in the day. Coming back north, the ocean pullouts are across the oncoming lane, and turning left into them on a blind curve is how fenders get bent.

Summer is the exception to the early start. Fog often sits on the coast until late morning, so in June to August leave Carmel around 10 and let it burn off. More in our guide to driving Highway 1.

What can you skip on a one-day trip?

Hearst Castle, the closed waterfalls and the noon slot at Pfeiffer Beach. Spend the saved time at Point Lobos instead.

  • Hearst Castle: about 89 miles from Carmel. It belongs to a one-way trip or a second day, with tours from $35 booked up to 60 days ahead (Hearst Castle tickets).
  • Pfeiffer Falls and Limekiln Falls: both trails are closed in 2026.
  • Pfeiffer Beach at midday: the 65-space lot fills, and you wait at the top of a single-lane road.
  • The shoulder at Bixby Bridge: parking is banned for about 900 feet north and 700 feet south of the bridge since August 2026. Pick a turnout outside the zone.
  • Esalen: visits are by reservation only. There is nothing to drop in on.

Want to see the coast from the old dirt road instead? The e-bike tour climbs the Old Coast Road from Andrew Molera. Confirm it is running after the fire closures.

What should you pack and book before the day?

A full tank, cash, layers and offline maps. Book Hearst Castle or a tour in advance; the parks themselves need no booking for day use.

  • Fuel: fill up in Carmel or Monterey. Gorda, the main pump on the south coast, charged $10.49 a gallon by the end of summer 2026.
  • Cash: handy for park kiosks; Limekiln, further south, takes cash only.
  • Offline maps: cell signal drops out for long stretches south of Carmel.
  • Layers and closed shoes: the coast sits in the 50s to 70s F, with wind on every bluff.
  • Food and water: restaurants are few and far apart, and there are no restrooms for miles around Bixby Bridge.
